Still Teaching and Loving Every Minute

One of my former students (20+ years old and about to get married) found me on Facebook (HOW I don't know - I just opened the account that day and we don 't have mutual friends). Wow, the powerfulness of Facebook.

But anyway in her first post on my wall she stated she was happy to find one of her favorite teacher (can you see me smiling - LOL) and then she asked, "Are you still teaching?" And.... my first response was Yes, and Loving Every Minute!!

This is the absolute truth. I can't see myself doing anything else besides helping, teaching, facilitating, and motivating young people so that they can be successful and productive citizens in our society. I hope that I can give them enough tools to overcome any obstacle they may face with an empowered sense of self. Well... here I go into another exciting year of teaching.

But I am thinking about what will I do when I retire. Oh I know.... Teach Online....Lol! You know...I think I will explore discussing my future desire to teach online in some future posts.

But I wish EACH and EVERY teacher a wonderful and successful 2011 school year. Teach something NEW and EXCITING this year......I WILL!

  1. I like the quotation at the end of your post. i have never contemplated another role although I have had breaks on my teaching career I do not think that I have ever stopped teaching in someway.

  2. I used to teach college students and was always surprised when they came back to talk to me. Now I work as a K to 4 school librarian with kids whose parents I know and who I can watch grow up. It is a really different experience to be so much a part of your life.

And yes, I can't imagine being anything other than a teacher. I have told my spouse that teaching is a calling--it chooses you; you don't choose it.

    Thanks for your post.

  3. Thanks for your great post Reba - it is wonderful that you have students who connect with you out of school. I came to teaching as a mature-age student, so have had many other jobs, but teaching is the one that I love. And I hope, by getting to know each of my students, they will learn to love learning as much as I do. Keep up the great work.

  4. It sounds like we all have the same passion for a profession that does not get the credit it deserves. Therefore we are those special soldiers in society that brings about citizens that can change the world. Thanks you all for your comments.

  5. Hi Reba,

Thanks for your post. I was one of those teachers, who after 5 years of teaching, decided I didn't want to do it anymore. Luckily for me, instead of giving up I decided a move was what I needed. So I packed up and moved from Australia to England. After 4 years I have returned to Australia and love teaching more everyday.

Thanks for writing a post that made me reflect on that!

  6. Hello Mel,

I too feel the same way. I know that a change is soon to come after teaching for 22 years. I am looking at relocating soon from California to Arkansas. And I am also looking REAL HARD at the online platform. I think a change of scenery will do me some good as well. Thanks for your post.
